Eat to the Beat...Downtown Café

It's no secret that the Downtown Café on Front Street in Red Bank provides a plethora of musical talent, but what most patrons and strangers to this hot spot don't know is that their menu is also full of delights. For my latest dining adventure I managed to score a date with none other than NJCoast's very own Joe Cullity. Joe is basically a meat and potatoes man while I prefer more of an exotic menu. After reading the menu, a little bell went off in my head. Jackpot! Not only was their plenty on the menu to cater to Joe's tastes but mine as well. Joe decided on the 12oz. Strip Steak which was accompanied by a large baked potato and rosemary sauteed zucchini (which I ate, Joe likes meat and potatoes not strange veggies) and I opted for the Grilled Portabella Sandwich. As far as I could tell the steak was enjoyed thoroughly, aside from the veggies their wasn't much else left on the plate when he was done. The Portabella Sandwich was also well enjoyed. The sandwich was served on warm foccacia bread with goat cheese and roasted red peppers and accompanied by a mound of cajun french fries. The meal was definitely too much to finish after my appetizer of cucumber avocado rolls, which to my fancy, was garnished with the spiciest mound of wasabi I have experienced in quite some time. Neither Joe or I are big drinkers so Coca Cola filled our wine glasses. An hour after we walked in to the Downtown,  we were almost ready to waddle out. Only one more thing needed to be taken care of, the bill. Thanks for a great dinner, Joe!

As for atmosphere, the Downtown is known for it's large twenty-something martini drinking crowd. The acronym YUPPY comes to mind. But, if you are not into the crowd, the music that is provided daily is definitely a draw. They've booked acts like local favorites The Sonny Kenn Band, nationals such as (continued on page 4)

Hooligans. If you play at Rich's club, you will most likely be well fed (for free), welcomed heartily (whether you're hotter than hotcakes or just hanging on by your fingernails) and Not made to feel guilty if you haven't brought hoards of heavy-boozing fans with you. There are discount drink specials for starving musicians, and a pleasant, no-muss,no-fuss attitude from all staff members, bartenders and music techs all 'round. As someone who falls into at least one of the "less than desirable" categories, I, for one, am grateful to Richie for putting his graciousness where his mouth is. I do like to bust his chops occassionally, though, and we open as I take a seat at the bar and he casts a venomous eye at my tape recorder.

JT:
Big strong guy like you, afraid of a little tape recorder...
RC: Nice boots.
JT: Ten bucks!
RC: Jesus.
JT: They work!
RC: Oh, they're stylish, let me tell you something! Sit.
