What's Up This Month on the New Jersey Coast

Northern Invasion
(Milwaukees/No Soap Radio)
Western and Northern Jersey acts show the coast It is hard to find musical acts that can be on the edge with experimentation and yet be accessible at the same time.  Well, look no further. Union County's No Soap Radio and West Jersey's The Milwaukees gave a dose of their unique styles at Hooligans on Friday, January 19 to a crowd that was more than receptive.

First was the Milwaukees.  I have had  these guys in my peripheral consciousness for many years, seeing their bumper stickers on many a toll booth. So I decided to see if they were worth all the hype.  Well, they are. The best way to describe them is a cross between the Grateful Dead and the Ramones.

Thrash chords from guitarist Jeff Nordstedt played through an Marshall amp that is probably older than him. Combine that with a good pulse from Brian Stoor who utilized every piece of skin in his drum kit and Dave Post on bass, who not only rounds the rhythm section but mimics some of the guitar runs of Nordstedt. The velvety sandpaper vocals of Dylan Clark bring a toughness and urgency to the music no heard in a while.  They played a good show without even resorting to a set list.  If I have caught you're attention, they'll be doing an all ages show
