What's Up This Month on the New Jersey Coast

Volume 2, Number 2, page 8

Commons/Marbles/Golden Seal(continued from page 6)
skinsman Mike Saroski performed cuts from their extremely wild CD "American Damage" which is highly recommended by Al Muzer of The Aquarian Weekly. They opened with the disturbing, yet beautiful "Happy Ever After."Other highlights included the easy power-pop of "Arlight" and the apocalyptic "Watch Me Fall."

The final act was Golden Seal, named after the herbal remedy that can clear marijuana out of your system.  Fronted by the very congenial Joseph Hughes, who also writes the tunes, Golden Seal offers a great deal of laid back country rock in the vein of Poco and the Eagles.  However, they do stretch themselves quite a bit. The lead guitar of Jay Sonotore supplieds a linear meanness to the sound, particularly on the slow blues in the second song of their set, "Demons." and the funky Wah-Wah of "Oh Yeah." Rounding out the rhythm section, bass player Dave Zagari and drummer Mike Santora funked out a little on the following song "Forgive," "I Will Not Give Up On You," and a their rousing cover of "Mustang Sally." They'll next bring their high spirits to Tumulty's Pub in New Brunswick on Thursday, February 15.- By David J. Gorsky

End note: Booking. This business is one of many personalities. Getting to know the person responsible for booking at each venue can be a daunting task.  Then, assembling press kits is time consuming and costly.  Follow up phone calls are often awkward.  And, often efforts may be wasted on a venue that is either not appropriate for your music, is out of your ballpark, or has no "house crowd" where you cannot draw.  Focusing your efforts on the right venues is very important.  Get to know the booking agents if you can by meeting them face to face at their venue.

Ask Bobby:

This months question
seems to be
"What's the Question ?"

I have one question I'd love to answer, but since young kids read this, I wouldn't be able to tell you what question I was answering. I have another question that's OK to print, but I doubt very much they'd ever let the only honest answer I could give to it, ever reach the web. I guess I get to take this month off and see what questions come in next month
