What's Up This Month on the New Jersey Coast

Volume 2, Number 1, page 5

Joe's Drivel Year 2000 Wrap-up

Well another year has come and gone and during the 12 months past, the music and events scene along the NJ coast has once again undergone a number of changes.

On the down side, 106.3 seems to be looking for a new direction and is no longer the staunch supporter of local music along the NJ Coast leaving The wRat, Brookdale Collage and Monmouth University radio as the remaining radio portals for original music along the NJ Coast.  The Ink Well in Long Branch has, after more them 25 years closed it's doors along with it's short lived brother The Ink Well 2 of Toms River. Moonrocks at least for now closed down and the Budapest Lounge, a right of passage for most New Brunswick Bands has been sold, closed and scheduled for major renovation with no clear indication if music will ever play their again, and Serenity's in Ocean Grove seems to have passed on to new owners with no interest in continuing it's tradition of live music.

On the plus side, music in Asbury Park is back, and back strong. The Stone Pony and the Fast Lanes are both back in full swing. The Saint has branched out running occasional shows at the Berkeley Carteret Hotel and the Sounds of Red Bank every Wednesday at the Internet Café. The Arthur Pryor Memorial Amphitheater was used for a number of outdoor concerts, the Hitching Rail sometimes presents live music and for a while Moonrocks flourished.

Outside Asbury, music also did well. In Highland Park, the Palmyra Tea Room, closed since the flood of Hurricane Floyd  reopened under new management as Zabba Zu, The Attic Lounge over the Peninsula Bar and Grill reopened for the summer season and will hopefully re_open again this year. Off the Hook in the Highlands is trying out different forms of acoustical music

This one's for the late Dave Vogt, I.E. "Vogty," former guitarist of Schrapnel (The late 70's early 80's Red Bank band from which sprung Dave Wyndorf of Monster Magnet). Dave passed away at age 40, just before Christmas 2000, and later in life he had developed a major talent for woodworking, but some of you diehard fans remember Schrapnel Dave as one of the legendary soundmen at the Brighton.
