What's Up This Month on the New Jersey Coast

Volume 2, Number 7, page 15

- Opening Acts -
A column dedicated to those local performers that have recently
shared the stage with national acts touring the NJ Coast.

Our first column is dedicated to "The Wag" who recently opened for Peter Tork.

We got the gig opening up for the Shoe Suede Blues, featuring Peter Tork of  the Monkees, by calling Kyle (a local booking agent) and asking for it. He said that he would do his best to get us the show.  The one thing that we had going for us was that we were a pop band with upbeat songs.  So he called us back a few weeks later and offered us the gig.  We were absolutely thrilled-  especially so was our keyboard player (Alicia Van Sant), who's a big Monkees  fan.  It was a great opportunity for us to get a lot of exposure. We were the only opening band, and we had a large crowd that night.

The Wag - Opening for Peter Tork

It felt great to share the stage with Peter Tork and the Shoe Suede Blues.   When you are sharing the bill with a national act it makes you feel like you  are really making some headway.  All the hard work is starting to pay off and people are recognizing your band's name more and more. Playing the small  seedy clubs and taking your lumps along the way is something every band must

endure...but it sure is nice to begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
We performed our set to a large crowd cheering us on. It was our biggest show to date.  We were very excited!  As soon as we were announced our hearts began to beat faster.  What a thrill! We did well that night and everyone  was pleased.  I think the Stone Pony staff were pleased also. They told us we brought a good crowd and were happy with the ticket sales.      Peter seemed to like our music also. He used our guitarist Dan's amplifier  since his own broke. And his manager, Bonnie Verrico, really liked us too.    She said she hopes we can work together again.  We were written up in the Asbury Park Press (April 27 edition), the Tri City News, and we got radio  airplay on a South Jersey station- KOOL 98.3.  We know one of the DJs there, and he promoted the show, played one of our songs, and did a ticket giveaway  contest.
We sold a lot of Wag merchandise at that show, and handed out a lot of our  business cards and free CD singles.
