What's Up This Month on the New Jersey Coast

Volume 2, Number 3, page 10

Open Mike Night(continued from page 9)
J.T.: Say if a little kid came in and wanted to play, would that be allowed?
R.F.: [jokeing] Only if he does it before his bedtime... I'll leave that up to his parents. No, there's no restrictions. We've had people come in with cellos...
J.T.: John Sara?
R.F.: Yeah. We've had comedians here...
J.T.: Poetry? Do you encourage poetry?
R.F.: I would encourage anyone with a talent to come in and play. We don't really encourage any type of instrument or talent...if people come in and do it, they're certainly welcome into the fold.
J.T.: And no special thing about covers or originals, all is welcome, right?
R.F.: Yeah, why would you have, why would anyone say 'No, you can't play that" ?
J.T.: So it's kid of like a mixture of music? Does it lean towards country, or folk? Is their a set up for if people wanna play electric, like say if a whole band wants to come in? Are you equipped to handle that with your PA?
R.F.: Yeah, we do have a small PA and the stage is fully equiped, but it would be great if people could let us know so that we could make arrangements for that.
J.T.: Is there a number that they can call you at?
R.F.: Sure, they can always leave a message for me at the pub [732-280-9411]. As far as the type of music that's played I would say that there's a wide mix. Every night someone's playing the Beatles, every night someone's playing...
J.T.: Dylan
R.F.: then there's the basic...
J.T.: Neil Young
R.F.: Yeah, there's a lot of that that goes on and this is a great question for me, I love answering it. I think it's so important because we have some people come up and they play the same song and it's "wait a minute; this song sounds like the first song you played"...and it's kind of, you know, I don't know, it's kind of monotoned and one dimensional and up, myself, I really work, I strive to play new stuff. Yeah, I play Neil Young and the Beatles, but I wanna to do stuff like Marshall Crenshaw... I think one of the greatest writers, and he'll never be recognized for this, is Pat Denizio. Between the words and the music... everyone knows Pat from the Smithreens...
J.T.: I don't know them...
R.F.: There a hard rock 80's band. I mean, just as an example, I think he's an incredible writer and it's not so much the music but the words, things like images that he portrays that are so much different then the image of him being the front man for a heavy rock band...
