Open Mike Night(continued from page 6)
J.T.: Oh! Alrightalrightalright!!!
R.F.:.Only because it would embarras her. So there were all my friends and these were people I felt, it's like the Frank Sinatra song, "If I can make it there, I can do it anywhere". It was either sink or swim here and I did and the reaction of the people just sealed my fate.
J.T.: Did you feel that way going in? That there was something on the line here?
R.F.:Lemmee just say, I heard rocky music in my head
J.T.: What do you mean Rocky Music
R.F.: From the movie "Rocky"... running up the steps and the music's playing and he makes a conscious descision to go for - that he's going to go for broke.
J.T.: So the way you started this is that you were coming to the open mike, and then someone asked you to host, or someone else bailed, or what happened there?
R.F.: I'm sort of a regular here at Bar A...
J.T.: I figured that out! [being we're sitting in a private room with a lit fireplace, a pink linen cloth and a floral arrangement on it...OK., it's a plastic floral arrangement, but still...]
R.F.: ...and when your a regular. it's kinda like a family. I'm very comfortable and I know everybody and one of the managers came up, knowing that I know a little bit about stage and stuff and asked if I would go up and help Lorrie [Tomlinson who was running the open mike at the time]. So I was helping her and playing guitar... and then Mike Scrivani was running it for a while...
J.T.: Oh yeah, I know Mike
R.F.: Yeah, he moved to Nevada
J.T.: Yeah!
R.F.: I don't know if he drove that car out there...
J.T.: I know what your talking about...
R.F.: ...and then Mike was leaving and they approached me and they said "Hey, would you be interested?" and I took a chance ...
J.T.: And you're glad you did?

neighbors) and a discussion as the writer's lyric sheet was passed around. The 'critique' portion was informal as everyone added their comments and suggestions focusing on topics such as imagery, cliché, structure and melody.

I left as the songcircle ended and socializing started. I headed back to Philadelphia in the late-night solitude of the turnpike; and I caught Sixers talk on AM sports radio as my erratic antenna was currently working.

Another one bytes the dust
Saturday Feb 24 marked the passing of another great local band when Follow that Car played their last song. Together for years, the group often opened the original WNEW FM Summer Party outside the Stone Pony in Asbury Park.
But hopefully all is not lost. A new project, Dick Tricky has absorbed most of the original Follow That Car members - Watch for more details. - Joe C
