Open Mike Night(continued from page 8) R.F.:
An I think that's important because, yeah, I mean everybody's a little shy or intimidated at first. I see somebody, with a guitar, I'm going to go up amd make them feel comfortable...a little comfort zone...and get their name and try to create a mental list, but the mental list changes, like in the case of KBob or Paul Marino [local gunslinger], or the other regular guys that come here, they'll say "Let's get the new guy up..."
J.T.: So they wanna come back... R.F.:
Yeah, because you don't want to...It's kind of disheartening... there was this girl... I won't even say her name but she was kind of frail and timid and I tried to go over and talk to her. Um, I don't know if she thought I was trying to come on to her...
J.T.: Aaa! R.F.:
You know, I was just trying to say "here's what's going on..." and she came in one week and said "I don't think I'm ready" and I didn't pressure her but what I should have done was encourage her because, like we were talking about before, no guts, no glory. Get up their and play. So what, you make a mistake. I did it, but you know what, that's the only way you're gonna get threw this...you...you're gonna move on. You're here now,... a little stage time and in a month from now you're gonna have that behind you and you're gonna be in another place. You're gonna be a little bit better.
J.T.: That's very good advice R.F.: It's confidence...and you should have encouraged her and made her stay, but I don't know how to make a girl stay. J.T.:
I see, you were worried that you didn't want to pressure her. R.F.: And she never came back. So [pause] you lose some. J.T.:
Yeah, you win some and lose some. That what KBob did for me when I first started playing. I would say that I don't want to play and I feel like I stink and I'm just not ready and he would say [friendly/snotty tone] "Get out there!".
R.F.: Because he was probably there at ... J.T.:
Yeah, at one time too [me special musician interruptus style...] sometimes I thikl it's better not to force yourself though, sometimes you gotta take a break... R.F.:
But you gotta keep going the, in some way...record at home. You gotta keep going J.T.: Yeah, especially at my age...I would say "our age" but I don't know how old you are. R.F.:
Yeah, in our advanced years.. Did you get your AARP card yet? J.T.:
Hahaha, not yet, I'm holding out for the "depends", once I start wearing them, I'll go for my card. What else do I have to ask you? Is there an age limit? R.F.:
Well, there is only in the area of ABC laws. This is a family bar during the day, there are kids here and it becomes a night club at night.(continued on page 10)
