Volume 2, Number 5, page 17

Jane Says
(continued from page 16)
jt   oh, really? Hahaha well...Staten Island guy...what was his real name again?
ph   David Johanson.
jt   yeah,yeah...
ph   from the New York Dolls...
jt   now There was a band!
ph   yeah, now there's a band. They were fun. They couldn't play their instruments but they sure looked good...
jt   specially those platforms, man. Guys in platforms, mmm, mmm, mmm! What kind of music are they spinning on Fridays? Is it gonna be rock and roll, or a combination of classic and new [it always makes the article run more smoothly if you answer your own question s as you ask them.]
ph   yeah, exactly, a mix, you know, a little bit of dance music, pretty much whatever the majority of the crowd wants.
[he asks me about another club and I give a lukewarm answer]
ph   the music scene around here sucks
jt   i know, cause people don't wanna...I don't know they don't wanna drag themselves...I don't blame them, I don't wanna drag myself out half the time either.
ph   you know what else, there's too much animosity between different...like the original bands think that, like they're on a high horse, and they have a problem with the cover bands. Ya know, and the cover bands...because the original bands have this dream of rock stardom or something. They're all gonna get signed and be millionaires...
jt   even if they get signed, you know, half the time you're signing your life away...I know so many people...that...you owe the record company...
ph   oh yeah, so do I...anyone that gets signed around here never gets a good deal..."Monster Magnet" was the last band to come out of here that did anything...
jt   yeah?
ph   yeah, there's bands that signed on around here onto these little independant record labelsthat think they're gonna take the world over...and they're probably not...I hope they do...you know, I don't mean any...ill will towards them but what's wrong with somebody that takes music for enjoyment and wants to be in a bar band and play bar gigs, there's nothing wrong with that.
