At the Bookstore...
Barnes & Noble adds music to its list of characteristics -- overpriced books and biscotti, killing small business -- in some surprisingly honest original music nights at the Brick location of this
chain bookstore.
Every Friday evening, the Barnes and Noble cafe becomes much like a coffeehouse (or as much as it can considering its small menu and enclosure in a bookstore). Nights of "Cafe

This month, Oct. 5 sees original music proveyors Cactus Blood, a local band at the Brick location for ''Cafe Music.''
It's the first time the group has played this untraditional venue. Cactus Blood will bring to the cafe its gritty rock-and-roll sound with a modern feel. Lyrically, that translates into some contemporary and relevent music. The live translation is 8 p.m. Oct. 5, in the cafe area of the store.
In B&N Unplugged, the audience and performers can enjoy an evening of original music performed by members of the community. Anyone can come to listen, or, if braver, to hop on
stage to perform. However, performance space and time is limited, and
pre-registration is required of performers. To register, call Daren at (732) 255- 5914. The B&N Unplugged nights are held the second Friday of each month, so for this month it's 7 p.m. Oct. 12.
At 8 p.m. Oct. 19, Cafe Music continues with local singer-songwriter Gene Lindsay. His original music has a classic sound, and it's another installment of the
early rock-and-roll melodies.
With both Cafe Music bands lying in the rock-and-roll genre, the showcase feels in need of (continued on page 16)
