Some of the best Jersey performers, old and new, obscure and popular, gathered at Hooligans in Long Branch on Friday, August 24, 2001.
The eloquent Betsy began the night in good form accompanied by Skybolt Jim Reia, who added just the right amount of color with his soloing acoustic guitar. Betsy's singing just seems
to get better with each performance.
And this particular outing was an improvment as well. She really came through on her original "The Night Before" when she sang literally at the top of her lungs. Betsy closed her set with an excellent cover of a Marie McKee (of Lone Justice fame) tune.

As though the concept of a tapas bar wasn't trendy enough, the owners of one such hot spot had to go and get some great up-and-coming local musicians to play there, too. At Echo in Red

Dogs of Pompeii (continued from page 1) main lyricist is Chris McMillan, a fine guitarist and music educator himself who has been playing for over ten years.
Their set unleashed songs of tongue-in-cheek humor and bizarre storytelling that would make a Zappa proud. Take "Simon
Freberg," a ditty from their CD "For Micro," which would make "Mack the Knife" seem tame by today's standards.

And they can get reflective and somber as well with "Song for Isabel."
