What’s Up This Month on the New Jersey Coast

Volume 4, Number 4, page 6

Living the Dream

I had a lot of friends in high school that said they wanted to be rock stars or own coffee shops when they grew up. Most of them are either delivering chicken now, or following Phish on tour. But Rich Cali, the owner of Belmar’s Coffee Blue, is the embodiment of this post- modern American dream.
Cali had been working in coffee houses for years before he moved to New Jersey to open up Coffee Blue. He, like my friends, knew he would either play in a band profesionally or open a coffee house. He never studied buisness in college, but didn't need to. He had the experience from working for years at Papa Joe's in Pennsylvania and the natural instincts to build a shop that would appeal to everyone and not be overly pretentious or hole-in-the-wall.

Rich Cali

Coffee Blue is located at 1000 1/2 Main Street in Belmar, almost in memorandum to the coffee shop that prev- iously inhabited the space, The Java Hut. But I do not mourn the loss of my favorite high school hang out-Cali has only improved upon a good thing.
Since the grand opening on December 20th, business has been booming, according to Cali. Events include

Sinatra Sundays, where Sinatra movies and records are played all day. (Call ahead, however; this doesn’t happen every Sunday.)Coffee Blue also offers comedy night on Wednesdays, open mic on Tuesdays which Cali describes as the best and most popular open mic around, tarot card and crystal ball readings on Thursdays for $12 and different live entertainment every Friday and Saturday. Different artists are also featured on the walls of Coffee Blue. Currently featured is an Asbury photo exhibit by Brian McGowan.

Art Benefit

On August 22, I attended a fundraiser for the Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts held at the Be Green Organic Juice Bar and Cafe in Belmar.
S.I.C.A. is a not-for-profit organization that is involved in sculpture and painting. The fundraiser was held to benefit construction of its new Long Branch building. The building, located off Broadway, will have a gallery, class rooms, artist studios and a cafe. They will also offer classes to high school age students and up.
The event was sponsored by Be Green, which also offered all the food and beverages. Be Green is a vegan and vegetarian cafe that sits on the ocean and has a quaint, inviting atmosphere, with walls clad in painted faux foliage. It was great for this event.  Its owners hope to be a permanent fixture in S.I.C.A's cafe.
