Jody Joseph with some of her younger Joes

Speaking to her after the show, I learned Jody's last name "Joseph" was chosen to honor her father, whom she loves dearly. The "Average Joes" part grew from a reflection on her exceptional band members, all of whom are your average "Joes" by day.
Jody's music is her life. When off stage, she dedicates herself to running a studio, teaching voice, and songwriting. Jody also suffers from the "ism" many of us in the music world are plagued with. She defined it as an inner calling that does not rest until she is actively engaged in the creative music-making process.
Of Jody's many soulful originals, one that really touched the audience was a new song with a gospel feel called "Mercy." Jodi wrote it just one week before the performance. During our talk, she validated its significance, noting her dream to release a gospel CD.
Rock musicians work hard for the opportunity to perform at the Starland Ballroom. "How many get there and then take time to nurture those inspired by their great feats?" Not many. The next time someone asks me this question, I know for sure what I'll reply. I'll say "I know of only one. That would be Jody Joseph and the [not so] Average Joes!"

Pat Guadagno, local legend, opened up the night with his precision renderings of some classic folk rock. Richard Blackwell, who added wonderful soul and rhythm to the set, accompanied him on congas. Pat gave heartfelt thanks to Scott for keeping the
