Hi Everyone: Went to the Open Mic at CrossRoads in Asbury, and here's the skinny...
it's run by Flathead Dave and Tommy Lamb, both members of the band "Flathead Dave and the Magnetos." there are massive amounts of equipment that vary from week to week. a great sound system. (what do i know, though) and a lively yet not too rowdy crowd. lots of good musicians showing up, no serious grandstanders. I asked Dave how folks should be prepared and he said to tell them to "just bring their ax and their drumstix." I said I don't have an ax, only a little paring knife. ha. sign up time 5pm.
OK! here is the skinny ... Tumulty's Pub has there open mic every Wednesday night from 9:30 till about 12:30. The 21 and over crowd of performers can look forward to an eclectic cast of colleagues and audience members, extreme fairness, a decent sound system, an excellent bartender, bar food and basically a real good time.
They encourage all kinds of music, are excited for new things, and do appreciate full bands but warn that lots of instruments take a long time to set up and since there is a limited amount of time allocated to each artist (a sum of 15 minutes including set up and break down), people should just take note is all.

Upstage Fundraiser at The Wonder Bar
On May 1st, 2004 I attended Upstage Magazine's annual fundraiser at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park. Gusts of ocean breeze and sunshine whisked through the doors welcoming a steady stream of local talent, fans and onlookers supporting this important area music and arts publication.
During my visit, I enjoyed listening to and meeting Wendie's Words and the Wonder Boys:Wendie's bright presence throughout her poetry recitation was backed by solid musical support from the band which included guest Frank Grappa on stand-up bass.

April Smith who's powerful vocals are a delightful surprise to her gentle presence. I'm glad her talents and love for performing have brought her back to the area music scene from a recent stay in Florida.
The Josh Zandman Trio: Making a special appearance to support the cause, JPat, Josh Zandman and Tommy Anton (and special guest - Melissa Chill) brought the house down on their rendition of Springsteen's "City of Ruin".
Eyestone: fronted by Karen Rush's dynamic stage presence that was sparkling during "Love You Tomorrow". A strong supporter of independent music, Eyestone is currently promoting their new CD "Up For Air".
