the jersey shore bands performing that night. Going alone or with a group didn't matter; the bands were on stage, not you. The night provided a hard edge sound by bands of high school++ age to which the audience could relate and move with.

My introduction to these groups began with an invitation from Kate’s mother, a personal and professional friend. A few years back I witnessed her struggle while ministering to

Sundays at the
Downtown Café Open Mic

loose and friendly as possible, a mix of an open mic and an open jam," Dye adds. "All levels of people are accepted."

With a full drum kit, P.A., and guitar amps already set up, bands and performers only need to bring themselves and their guitars. On the more crowded Sundays, however, storage space for instruments is at a premium, so bringing more than one instrument is certainly not advisable.

Rob Dye has been hosting this Sunday jam at the Downtown Café for more than seven years, making it one of the longest standing open mic nights in the area. Like most of the other musicians and performers, Dye plays out on a regular basis with an R&B cover band called the Extras. He can also be seen accompanying original solo artist Melissa Chill. More recently, Rob has begun performing his own solo music, which he places in the country-rock vein.

At the Downtown Cafe’s Open Mic

The Downtown Café is located at 8 West Front Street in Red Bank, a few doors down from Chubby's and across the street from the Internet Café. There is never a cover or minimum for the open mic. There is a full-service bar which features everything from ordinary tap beers to a wide selection of flavored martinis, and other en vogue cocktails. There is also a full-service kitchen and Sushi bar. Despite the Café's trendy offerings and posh appearance, the vibe is friendly, and the music is very real - and always kicking. This is a great place to meet other musicians, showcase your talents, or just top off your weekend with a drink and some great tunes.
