Indigo Coffeehouse
First Look

 from page 1
there’s drink pressure, cover charges, and minimum purchases. Here you can enjoy the music and some great desserts with a latte. It’s a smoke-free environment with safe, ample parking. Many locals already know the spot from Cue & Brew. I knew I had to experience this cool, hot spot so I headed on down, had a cappuccino, and chatted with owners David and Ileana Kosciolek to get the sweet and low down.

NJC: Why did you decide to open a coffeehouse?
David: The coffeehouse is really Ileana. Her family has been in restaurant businesses her whole life. I always wanted to open a rock ‘n’ roll bar. But I couldn’t really do it. It didn’t happen. She gets her coffeehouse and lunch (because she loves to cook) and I get to bring the music.

NJC: Why Indigo?
Ileana: It’s actually a tree that grows in my country El Salvador. It’s interesting people remember it.

NJC: How did you choose this location/area/spot?
David: We’re local residents. We’ve been living in this area for about seven years. We currently live in Aberdeen. We knew this exact spot very well. We knew this area was severely lacking anything like this other than one or two bars. But if you really don’t want to go to the bar scene and

want to hear music… There’s nowhere for local musicians to really go and play [showcase]. The closest is Red Bank and Red Bank can be tough.

NJC: What was this before it became Indigo Coffeehouse?
David: The last business in here was a cake store with big ovens.

NJC: How much did you have to change it?
David: We completely renovated it. With music in mind, we optimized the floor space. We sacrificed on storage space and the kitchen to make sure we could get the 50-person occupancy when we sponsor entertainment.

Kate’s
Benefit

 from page 8
While at Harry’s, I caught the following acts: Traveling Light’s Dan Strack and Brian McClosky (United just for the show, Dan’s wife Renee is Kate’s sister and Executive Director of the Foundation); Joe Rapolla and

Perfect Square (Long-time good friends preparing to make their 2nd CD,  their smooth vocal harmonies are to be admired); Andy McDonough with Notes to Myself (Andy’s originals “It’s a Matter of Time” and “Take a Little Chance on Love” were particularly noteworthy with the band’s full sound); Pat Guadagno (His solo performance of the song he wrote for Kate rekindled the love for this courageous woman); and Brian Kirk and the Jirks (Who took the listener on a lightening tour of musical greats -- from Morrison to Sublime and everywhere in between – with the energy of a rocket at take-off).

By the time I left, I felt a profound sense of awe at the number of people in this close shore community willing to give of themselves so freely.
