from page 1 From behind the wall of the sound cage, I heard this voice singing on stage... haunting, soft, but somehow still able to penetrate - I knew I was finally going to get a full dose of Karen Rush... performing with the entire band "Eyston". I first meet up with Karen back in July 2002 at The Asbury Cafe.
After the 2002 show, I had a chance to talk with her, and Karen went out of her way to tell me about her full band, and introduced me to most of it's members, who had traveled down to Asbury to support her performance. I made a mental note that I had to see this band, and now 2 years latter, I finally had the chance.

Of course the version of the band I was lucky enough to see that night, would not be the same band she had when I first met her. Karen's first band called simply "The Karen Rush Band" dissolved back in 1999. For a while Karen played solo, but during 2001, Karen continued on page 11

NJC: Have you been able to get a performer that drew that many people? David: We closed one time because there were too many people. It was a band from Staten Island, NY, called Professor & Maryanne.
NJC: How did you get the word out? David: I didn’t. The word came to me.

NJC: Do you advertise when an event is coming up? David: In the Asbury Park Press. We’ll also be in Upstage Magazine every month.
NJC: How long have you been open? Ileana: Eight months. We started renovating in April 2003 and opened in September 2003.
NJC: How many gigs do you have each week? David: Open mic every Thursday, which has really

picked up. We also feature live music every Friday and Saturday
NJC: In the eight months you’ve been open, do you see anything you’d like to change up or subtract? Ileana: We will be adding more items to the menu. We will add things that are more popular in other parts of the world (see newsletter)
NJC: What’s the average meal price for two people to have lunch? David: These are fresh made-to-order sandwiches. They are around $4.95 for a sandwich and tortilla chips. We always have the ever-popular California Chicken Salad. So that with a drink for two is about $13.
NJC: Have you been varying the type of music you’re bringing in? David: It’s been 70 percent acoustic rock. We have had a jazz ensemble, a world percussion group who heard about us through word of mouth and wanted to perform here.
NJC: Can people get up and dance? David: Yes, it’s totally encouraged. continued on page 11
