Open Mic at Berkley Carteret

From seven o’clock until one o’clock on Friday nights, there is something doing in Asbury Park for local musicians. Open Mic at The Berkley Carteret Hotel’s Oak Room on Ocean Ave. has enough room for your fan base yet intimate enough for a candlelight dinner. A family friendly atmosphere with a bar and an open grill awaits you. Around the room, art deco triangle chairs the have survived the test of time as well as a well laid out patio area to have a smoke. Where else can you go have a drink and play a song these days?

Chris Barry - Remembered -

Back on May 5, 2006, the Jersey shore got a little quieter. A spirited writer and active member of our local music scene and beyond, Chris Barry, age 54, passed away due to chronic obstructive Pulmonary Disease. He suffered from emphysema but this original velvet teddy bear of John Goodman size did not let it affect his participation in the booming and ever evolving Jersey Shore music scene.
On Wednesday, May 24 at the Wonder Bar, friends and supporters paid homage to him in the kind of memorial a rock star would want. Local musicians came, under the organization of Joe Harvey of Wonder Bar and Maureen Nevin of Asbury Radio, and played set after set in tribute to a man who has booked everyone and their mother along this great stretch of abandoned boardwalk.
Between acts, Nevin and a few other friends got up to

Java Joint Open Mic

Most of the time, I spend my Monday nights watching television and going to bed early. After a hectic summer weekend, it seems like theres nothing to do when the week begins again. At least thats what I thought until I heard about the Open Mic Night at the Java Joint in Toms River. Located on Washington Street, this coffee shop has an arty atmosphere and a cup of coffee that will blow your mind.
Their Open Mic is run a little bit differently than most. Instead of signing up an hour before it starts, performers have to call the store the morning of the show to reserve a time slot. They fill very quickly. The quality of the musicians ranges from beginners to professionals and they each play either three songs or for fifteen minutes. While pianists are welcomed to play, they are at a disadvantage because the Java Joint does not have a boom mic stand. In fact, the PA system is mediocre as well, but it does get the job done.
Just as with any Open Mic night, the turnout could be great, or very intimate. As a general rule, it gets more crowded as the night rolls on. Cost for admission is an easy two dollars and the fun begins at 8 pm.
